President Obama has chosen as a general surgeon, Dr. Regina Benjamin, in rural areas, the Gulf Coast Family Physicians, MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient, and the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights of the recipient, the first black woman head of state medical societies, and the first woman, the first African-American woman and first person younger than 40 years of age to participate in the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association.

Basically, what I say to you that it rocks.

2008 MacArthur Fellows Her bio reads like a Bizarro World version of the Bush era of bio-appointed, or qualified, competent, and deep admiration for the person.

Benjamin is a qualified and translation research on preventive measures in health care accessible, community-based interventions to reduce the disease burden of their diverse patient base, which includes immigrants from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, who constitute one third of the population of Bayou La Batre. A committed local physician, she also plays the key role of the state and national levels, helping to create other clinics in remote areas of the country and serving in leadership positions in health-related organizations as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. With a deep, first-hand information about the pressing health needs and disparities affected the rural areas, high-poverty communities, Benjamin is to ensure that the most vulnerable among us have access to quality care.
