U.S. actor Karl Malden, best known for his roles in films such as the Tram "Desire" and "On the quay, has died at the age of 97.

He was also known for playing Lt. Mike Stone in long series, Streets of San Francisco.

Malden won the Oscar for best supporting actor in 1951, his performance in Tramway 'Desire and was again appointed in 1954.

Malden, who died at his home, was in poor health for several years.


His family said he died of natural causes.

Earlier in his career, Malden said he realized that his average looks and distinctive nose - twice broken in the sports field - is unlikely to make his leading man.

Many of his more memorable performances came in support roles.

Homicide Detective

His film career flourished in the 1950's and 60, with parts in films such as the Birdman of Alcatraz, the West won, Gypsy, The Kid in Cincinnati, and Patton.

He avoided shifts in television for many years, but gave way in the murder of the bone detective Mike Stone on the streets of San Francisco, which operated from 1972 to 1977.

His younger on-screen police partner, INSP, Steve Keller, played by Michael Douglas.

Malden was nominated four times for Emmy on the streets of San Francisco. Finally, he won in 1984, the mini-series "Fatal Vision".

He was married to actress Mona Graham for more than 70 years, one of the longest partnerships in Hollywood history.
